WHEN IS IT TIME TO REPOT PLANTS?
- by James Milner
Growth stop
Did the houseplant used to grow and flower well and regularly, but now it seems to be doing less well? Then it could be that the plant does not have enough room to grow and therefore needs a bigger pot. Please note that plants always have a growth stop in autumn and winter due to the reduction in light.
In balance, out of balance
Is the plant growing at an increasingly slanted angle? Then it is possible that the plant is simply growing towards the light. Then give it a little twist so that the back side also gets some sunlight. But if the plant is big and the pot small, it can also grow at an angle due to top heaviness. In that case, give the plant a new, spacious pot.
Quicker dehydration
Does the houseplant seem to be drinking water much faster than before? And is the potting soil bone dry again in no time? This may indicate an oversized root system. The ratio between plant and soil has been lost. The houseplant needs more space to grow.
The best time to repot a plant
Does your plant look far from lively? Then it is smart to give it a new pot immediately. Are other plants in less of a hurry? Then between March and June is the best time to repot a houseplant. In this period there is a lot of light and this provides more energy for the plants. This is also called the growth period of plants. In this period the roots grow the fastest. So a houseplant will thrive best in a new pot. period.
